2018-04-03 Fishing Reports

Fresh Water:

  • Barry: Sandy and Barry were at Durrance, both caught fish.
  • Barry found lots of wind but no interested fish in Prospect.
  • On Saturday, Bill and Barry caught fish in Durrance, and Lev hooked his first trout, briefly.
  • Dennis on Elk Lake last week, caught 2 fish, trolling at 18 feet with Wee Tad plugs.
  • Dave has a friend who’s selling an 8-foot aluminum jon boat with electric motor and depth sounder. Contact Dave if interested.

Salt Water:

  • 4 nights, three days fishing all found, $1500 per person at Nootka Sound Lodge. Contact Peter if interested in setting up a group for this summer.

2018-03-27 Fishing Reports

Fresh Water:

  • Barry reported 6 trout in Prospect Lake last week.
  • Jim reported Durrance, fishing March Brown: a lot of fish, once he moved down to a size 12.
  • Winston – invited GRR members to a Cowichan River Skunkathon, meet at Tim Hortons on Millstream Road at 8:00 AM Thursday.  Stoltz campground at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM sausages and coffee.
  • May 22, Sandy and Ron planning to go up to Peterhope Lake.
  • Elk Lake Derby: 14 April 2018, $25 per adult and $10 per child. Every child gets a prize. A 12” Lowe boat with a 6 HP motor is the draw prize.

Salt Water:

  • Big halibut are being caught at 600 feet.

2018-03-20 Fishing Reports

Fresh Water:

  • Barry, no fish on Durrance.
  • Brian, no fish on Prospect.
  • John, bought a belly boat and some snazzy titanium eating utensils.
  • Bill bought boat and motor.
  • Fly-tying on Monday, 26 March 2018, Haig Brown Club at CPO Mess.

Salt Water:

  • Roger has been catching hatchery springs in Haro Strait.

2018-03-13 Fishing Reports

Fresh Water:

  • Fish-out in Durrance Lake: Fish caught, hot dogs were excellent, Dale checked out nymphs, water temp and PFD (PFD worked, water was cold).
  • Jim caught lots of fish, March Brown and Pumpkin Head were catching. Sunday Langford Lake no fish.
  • Ron at Cowichan River, no fish.

Salt Water:

  • Ryan on 232 plug caught 13 lb Chinook.

2018-03-06 Fishing Reports

Fresh Water:

  • Barry, at Durrance Lake, had nothing to brag about. Jim, who doesn’t brag, caught a number of fish in Durrance, using a clear line, a type 3 sink, trolling with March Brown, fishing deep. The bite, as usual, started at 11:00 AM and lasted for half an hour.
  • GRR fish-out, at Durrance Lake tomorrow 7 Mar. Hot dogs will be served at 1:00 PM.

Salt Water:

  • Ron reported fishing Whirl Bay on Sunday, no fish.
  • An article on in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Magazine cited new research by American fisheries biologists that showed that sea lions and seals are seriously depleting Chinook salmon stocks.
  • In BC, Chinook fishing will be curtailed in some way this year. DFO is currently proposing a closure from Sheringham Point to Port Renfrew, as well as areas off Pender and Saturna.
  • DFO has closed the commercial herring fishery in the Bella Bella area in response to complaints from the Heiltsuk First Nation.
