FISHLEARN: Still Water Chironomid and Other Techniques
PRESENTER: John Braybrook.
I started fishing at around 5 or 6 in the small lakes west of Edmonton for perch and northern pike. We also took trips to Adams Lake where I was introduced to rainbow trout. My brother and I began fly fishing in the lakes around the town of Jasper. It became such an obsession that I went to University in Nelson so I could be close to the legendary Kootenay Lake Gerrard rainbows. I got my degree in Biology and worked for several years for the Ministry of Environment in the West Kootenays. Much of my work was around sampling and monitoring the lakes and rivers in the region. In 1980 I bought a fishing resort on Kootenay Lake. I tied flies for the clients and also taught fly fishing and fly tying for the local regional district. I put aside my fly gear for about 15 years where my brother and I spent most of our time fishing for salmon. In 2001 we did a trip to Tunkwa Lake and I have been going back every year since. I am now retired, where I spend time tying flies for my friends and for various charity events. I do not do nearly enough fishing. I am a long time member of the Haig-Brown Fly Fishing club.
